Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) can be confirmed if you tried two or more conventional antidepressants with no improvement in your condition. If you’ve been diagnosed with Treatment Resistant Depression, you now have another way to get relief with SPRAVATO®. This nasal spray has been shown to help with depression symptoms, like suicidal thoughts and actions.

Notwithstanding, SPRAVATO is used differently than the traditional pill or liquid. It is a extremely regulated FDA-approved treatment that can only be given by authorized SPRAVATO providers. So, what can you be prepared for during your SPRAVATO treatment Near Middlesex?

SPRAVATO Can Only Be Administered Through An FDA-Approved Provider

SPRAVATO can only be dispensed under strict medical guidance at a facility certified in the SPRAVATO Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. The Counseling Center at Middlesex is proud to be included in the program and an sanctioned SPRAVATO treatment provider. Before you start your care, we will educate you on the risks of SPRAVATO use, including sedation, dissociation, abuse, and misuse. We’ll also talk about common side effects, some of which occur directly following the dose and go away the same day.

Beginning SPRAVATO Treatment Near Middlesex

Your SPRAVATO treatment can start as soon as your second appointment. But before you begin, there are a couple of things to consider.

  • Secure transportation. You’ll need a lift to and from our office as you won’t be allowed to drive or do anything that requires undistracted alertness until the next day.
  • Bring something to do. After you take the nasal spray, you’ll be monitored for at least two hours. Bring a book, a fully charged phone, or a different form of portable entertainment.
  • Guidelines for food and drink. Since SPRAVATO can cause nausea and vomiting in some patients, we advise that you don’t eat for at least two hours prior and avoid liquids for 30 minutes prior.
  • Don’t take other nasal medications for at least one hour. If you medicate with nasal corticosteroid or nasal decongestant medications, do so at least one hour prior your treatment.

Once you’ve made your preparations, you will start your session. We will guide you on the proper way to take the nasal spray. You will self-administer the spray while under the direct care of our clinicians. We’ll observe you for a minimum of two hours for side effects and let you know when it’s safe for you to go home.

For four weeks, you will take SPRAVATO twice per week. Once finished, we’ll review the levels and frequency of of your dosage and suggest a course of action that takes into account your symptoms, progress, and other factors.

What Will I Feel Like During A SPRAVATO Treatment?

SPRAVATO typically provides a calm feeling that helps diminish your symptoms of TRD. The dosage will not cause sleepiness in most patients, but you could feel sleepy or doze off during treatment. The tiredness or sleepiness you feel should leave shortly after the office visit ends or during your monitored recovery time.

Other complications are possible, including nausea, vomiting, disorientation, or dizziness. However, many patients experience very few or no side effects at all.
